Hawaii Five-0 What's next? Deets on Season 3 #H50 via TV Line

The Season 2 finale of CBS’Hawaii Five-0 packed quite a Hawaiian punch on Monday night, killing off one recurring character, putting a bullet in another, leaving the lives of two women in jeopardy and bringing McGarrett face-to-face with the mysterious Shelburne – who is someone he knows, but surely never expected to see again.

Here is what executive producers Peter Lenkov and Elwood Reid shared about the shock and awe and aftermath, during a recent press gathering.

MAMMA, MIA! WAS THAT SHELBURNE? | Just to be clear, connect the dots and put to rest any worries about semantics, Joe did in fact lead McGarrett to the mysterious Shelburne – whom a shocked Steve greeted with a “Mom?” “The identity of Shelburne will be revealed [in the final five seconds],” Lenkov confirmed. And make no mistake, we’ll get to witness all of the most unexpected reunion. “[Next season] really picks up a second later,” says Lenkov.

WHO WILL CHIN HO LOSE? | Delano made Chin Ho choose between rushing to rescue wife Malia, who was being held at gunpoint at home, or cousin Kono, bound and about to be pitched over the side of a boat. Chin Ho ran to his missus, who nonetheless seemed very much worse for the wear, while Kono was last seen flailing and falling deeper and deeper into the Pacific. Without revealing either woman’s fate, Lenkov said that in Season 3, “We’re going to break [Chin Ho] and have him get rebuilt up again. When we found him he was already broken, but you never got to see him when he was a strong cop and got everything taken away from him. Now we want to see things taken away from him and see how he deals with it. We’re very deliberately altering his character.” And Daniel Dae Kim’s take on the sad Sophie’s Choice? “He loved the challenge, emotionally,” Lenvok shared, “with what he was going to do with his character.”

WHAT’S NEXT FOR DANNO? | Detective Williams got off easy compared to everyone else in the finale, save for some domestic strife between him and ex-wife Rachel, who is threatening to move Grace to Las Vegas. Nonetheless, “There’s a lot of wood on the fire in the finale [that's] going to give us a lot of stuff to play” in Season 3, said Reid. “There’s some stuff that played during the middle of the season, particularly with Danny, that’s going to come back next season too.”

HAVE WE – AND MCGARRETT – SEEN THE LAST OF JOE WHITE? | Though Joe vanished into thin air before taking McGarrett to Shelburne, and despite Terry O’Quinn’s 666 Park Avenue pilot landing on ABC’s fall schedule, the Five-0 bosses are hoping for the occasional encore. “[Terry] is open to it, which we were all very surprised and excited about,” said Lenkov. “We love him, and hopefully he’ll come back.” After all, as Reid noted, “Joe is integral to the McGarrett mythology.”

H50 - What You Can Expect According to Hawaii Five-0 Bosses via TV Equals

Now that we’ve all seen the jaw-dropping Hawaii Five-0 season finale promised in our interview with Executive Producer Peter Lenkov and Co-Executive Producer Elwood Reid, I know we’re all probably wondering the same thing – what comes next. Luckily they did give us a few hints and tidbits, and also talked to us about filming the show in general.

First up, here’s what we can expect next season.

– The first episode of next season will resolve the various storylines from the finale, but the impact those incidents had on the characters will continue to affect them.

– Michelle Borth will return next season and join the team full time.

– Fans might be very surprised to see what happens to Wo Fat next season.

– Yes, they would love to have Ed Asner back again.

– They are unsure if there will be another crossover next season. They pointed out that those types of episodes are fun, but also a logistical nightmare – especially with series that are filmed on different continents.

– They are hoping to have James Caan back again next season and report that Caan is interested in coming back, so they have already started plotting out new possible stories for him.

In addition to giving us teasers about last week’s finale and next season, both EP’s also talked about the show in general and what it’s like re-imagining a series based on a show that premiered more than 40 years ago.

– Yes, they have watched the original, but not so much to get story ideas. They do however use the original show to get information to flesh out characters, look for old shooting locations to use again, etc. They are also very proud to have some of the original crew back working on the new show.

– Regarding using characters from the original series, they told us that they play the show as if there was no original Five-0; the team that they created exists today. For instance, when they brought in the character August March and he mentioned that he met McGarrett’s father, it was because McGarrett senior was the cop who drove August to the police station – not because he was any sort of “original Five-0″ member.

– They are very proud to see how much the show has become a hit with fans and how some terms from the series have even become household words. Such as other TV shows and movies using “Five-0″ as a term for the police, as well as how the word “cargument” has now ended up in common use and even has an entry in the Urban dictionary.

And there you have it, all the information we could possibly need to hold us through what is sure to be a very long summer. Be sure to keep checking back here on TV Equals for the latest news on the next season of Hawaii Five-0 as we get it.

Hawaii Five-0 - Mahalo from the Cast to the Fans #H50

What @PLenkov & @elrudest Want You to Know About Tonight’s Finale #H50 via TV Equals

Last week Hawaii Five-0 Executive Producer Peter Lenkov and Co-Executive Producer Elwood Reid sat down to talk about this year’s season finale. Though they were understandably reluctant to give too much away, they still gave us a good idea of what you can expect tonight.

– Joe is back and will play an integral part in the finale. He brings Steve the information that he has been seeking and fans will finally find out the identity of the mysterious Shelburne.

– Tonight’s episode will have very emotional repercussions for a couple of the team members, including Chin. With these incidents, they will be breaking Chin down so that they can explore building him back up again next season.

– Fans should be ready to say goodbye to somebody on the show and the finale will end in a huge cliffhanger. The stakes at the end of this season are even bigger for the team than they were last season.

– Asked to describe the finale, they both said it was “jaw-dropping,” that the episode has a “compelling case,” and that there will be a “lot of action.”

Now that you’ve heard from the creators, here are a few of my own thoughts about the finale.

The hits start right from the beginning and they don’t stop.

There’s a moment that happens less than five minutes in to the show that has such ramifications that I could easily see a scene like that happening at the end and yet it basically starts the episode. After that, things go from bad to worse for the team. The amount of near-misses, injuries and life-threatening incidents is off the charts. If you are looking for a nice relaxing episode, you will not find it here.

A lot of familiar faces return

As the EP’s said above, Joe is back in this episode. But what you may not know is that he’s not the only character to return. I think it’s more fun seeing these people come up in the storyline without knowing so I’m not going to mention any names but I will say that ever familiar face that returns is vital to the overall story.

Never let your guard down

Just when you think things are quiet, or that the case is resolved, or that all the bad stuff is over – it’s not. Like never. I’m not going to say how many times new surprises come up to bite our favorite characters in the ass, but I will say it’s more than once and less than ten. My advice: don’t leave your couch during this entire episode. If you need a snack or a potty break, go during a commercial. If you go any other time, even if you think all is well, you’ll be sorry. Consider yourself warned.

So there you have it, vital information about tonight’s Hawaii Five-0 finale from the Executive Producer and Co-Executive Producer themselves, as well as my personal thoughts. Still thinking about skipping this one or leaving it on your DVR for another night?…..Yeah, I didn’t think so.

Be sure to check out my full review once the episode airs and then come chime in on the comments to let me know what you guys thought of it. I love hearing from you!
